There are many options for hydrogen storage:

  • As a gas in pressurized tanks.
  • In lower pressure metal hydride tanks.
  • As a cryogenic liquid in insulated tanks.
  • In pipelines.
  • Combined with other molecules to make other liquids and gases that can generally be less expensively transported (e.g., ammonia, methane, methanol, formic acid, various hydrocarbons).
  • In underground natural gas storage fields.
  • In underground salt caverns.
